Testimonials

Carolyn L.

Good morning Bryan. I hope you are having a good week. It was our son’s birthday yesterday and I just wanted to let you know that he was thrilled to receive his painting. He kept on saying, “How did he do this?”
My older son said you nailed it and even got his brother's pudgy little fingers right (they are always teasing each other about who was the chubbier baby).
Thank you again for all of your work on this project. It is such a gift.

The quality of the work was exceptional. When you sent some drafts early on it whetted my expectations and I couldn't wait. The portrait made me very happy and proud. Everyone in the family loved it, especially the grands. It was a good choice and investment.

Why Special Needs Portraits?

As previously mentioned, providing free portraits to families affected by disability is no gimmick. I’m part of the extended disability community: my younger sister, my cousin, one of my in-laws, and children of a some friends have varying degrees of special needs.

While our families are like most other families, there are some unique challenges, one often being a family portrait. Something that may often be taken for granted is often a source of pain, frustration, and embarrassment for many families with special needs. In short most photographers aren’t trained to work with families affected by disability, and some have intentionally (or unintentionally) hurt these families when they sought their services. Thankfully, there is a growing number of photographers serving families with disability, and a few organizations that provide training for photographers interested in learning how to serve my community. Some of these organizations were started by parents who were hurt when trying to go get photos taken of their family. There are even fewer portrait artists serving this (my) community.

However, I hope to change that with your help.

Cost is often another prohibitive factor, with many families carrying significant financial responsibilities for the care of their loved one(s). This is why my goal is to provide an 11x14 or 16x20 portrait free of charge to one family per month beginning in January, 2021 (preferably sooner).

This will be done through partnerships with faith-based organizations that directly serve families affected by disability. More information will be forthcoming.

Portrait FAQ

Do you only paint humans?

No. Although I specialize in human portraits I can also depict your pet family members as well!

How long will my portrait take?

Please allow 8-12 weeks for the creation of your portrait. Each piece is unique and hand-crafted.

Are my photos good enough to use?

If you follow these guidelines then you should be good to go.

  • Good lighting (facial features clearly visible).

  • Large enough to clearly see facial features and details.

  • The subject(s) face is not obscured.

  • Angle: Eye level or higher (unless otherwise desired).

  • Include the torso to top of head or closer.

  • The photo(s) is not blurry.

NOTE: Old and/or damaged photos
Sometimes all we have left of a loved one are a few damaged or old photos. If that's you I'd still like to explore working with you. Please upload your photos.
If for some reason we can’t work with the photos you have you’ll be issued a full refund.

Does it matter if my photo has stuff in the background?

No, don’t stress about the background. Just make sure there’s nothing obscuring the subject(s) you want depicted.

Can I change my order?

You can change the number of subjects and/or photo(s) submitted within 48 hours of placing your order.

Can you add/remove things for me?

Yes, in some cases.

  • Adding: I can add a small item to a portrait if a photo of it is submitted with the intake form. I can also add more subjects for an additional cost per subject if their photos are submitted with the intake form. I can also add a different background. Just upload an image labled “background” when filling out the intake form.

  • Removing: I will remove or stylelize the background of the uploaded reference photo unless otherwise requested. I can also remove subjects from the reference photo if desired.

Will I see the finished artwork before it gets shipped?

Yes, a digital proof will be sent to the email address you provide when purchasing your portrait.

NOTE: Only small changes or finishing touches can be accepted at this point.
